Visiting Abu Dhabi can be fun and exciting. Many people travel to this destination for business reasons or for vacations. Of these travelers, many will want to rent a car in Abu Dhabi. In a moment, we will look at some of the driving rules you need to know about, but, first, let's look at some of the things you can do in this wonderful location.
Those familiar with Abu Dhabi always suggest travelers take some time to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center, which is often referred to as “breathtaking”. You may also want to visit one of the newest and most exciting attractions; the Yas Marina Circuit, a premier racing course that rivals any other. And no visit would be complete without seeing the Emirates Palace and the Observation Deck at 300.
Now, for some information for those who will be taking advantage of car rentals in Abu Dhabi. It is imperative that you obtain an International Driving Permit in order to drive. Note: This is NOT the same as an International Driver's License (that is for those who plan to live in Abu Dhabi).
If you have an accident when driving overseas, using an unofficial IDP may invalidate your insurance. Official IDPs are issued exclusively in the Emirates by the ATCUAE. Don't be duped into obtaining your permit from false agents and vendors.
International Driving Permits are available in the UAE from ATCUAE offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai & Sharjah, from Emirates Post Offices and a number of other ATCUAE agents. Remember: visitors cannot use their national license for driving purpose in the Emirate without having the additional permit.
So, if you are going to use car rentals in Abu Dhabi make sure you get your permit. It is easy to do and it's the law.
