  • Another year of delay for a new Berlin airport

    Hot Pic Title

Official opening of the new airport in Berlin is moved once again – at least till the year 2014 for now. However, it is quite possible that it will take about two more years to wait – till Autumn 2014 or Spring 2015.

The reasons for delay are called problems with luggage forwarding and fire-fighting systems. Berlin Brandenburg Airport was supposed to be open as far back as in June 2012, but its opening was delayed for a few months at first and till Spring 2013 then. The next deadline was in next year's October, but it will not be ready in time as well.

The crisis which started in Spring has lead to a complete change in project management and several companies working on it. From now on the Burgomaster of Berlin is under the threat of non-confidence vote. According to experts, built terminal facilities are insufficient for now to serve passenger traffic at the capital of Germany.

The new airport which was under construction from 2006 till 2012 is supposed to take place of both existing airports in Berlin: Tegel and Schoenefeld. Tempelhof, the third airport, has been closed a few years earlier.

Engineering of Brandenburg Airport has began as far back as in 1980's and construction – in 2006. At the price of $5 billion, it became one of the largest construction projects in Germany.
