The traditional winter Carnival week also called the “Fifth Season” has started in Germany on 11th of November 11:11 a.m. according to local time.

During this event numerous clowns dressed in varicolored clothing, minstrels and fairy-tale characters gather on market-places of various cities in Germany and announce that from now on they symbolically rule the nation at least until February. With the help of humor and satire Carnivals draw attention to actual social conflicts and various absurd and funny sides of politics from the citizen's point of view.

The Carnival center is the city of Cologne, but festive events are also held in such cities as Dusseldorf, Bonn, Koblenz and Mainz. Thousands of people take part in Carnival parades and demonstrations every year. Festivities will last until Ash Wednesday – the first day of Lent.

The tradition of winter balls, masquerades, demonstrations and competitions has started in the second half of the 19th century and was about generally on the territory of North Rhine Westfalia. After the German reunification this tradition was spread on the East as well.
