  • The lists of possible “cars of the year” in the USA and Europe are announced

    Short lists of two major automotive awards contestants – “2013 North American Car / Truck of the Year” and “European Car of the year 2013” are finally revealed.

    Speaking of the first contest, 30 cars and 15 trucks took part in it initially and 11 and 10 contestants respectively managed to hit the final short list. Such sports cars as Porsche 911 and Boxster, supercar SRT Viper, two Lexus models, three Mercedes, Toyota and Subaru models and electric sedan Tesla Model S were eliminated from the list of contenders.

    As a result, the victory will be claimed by such cars as BMW 3-Series, Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Malibu, Dodge Dart, FordFusion etc and such trucks as Acura RDX, Audi Allroad, BMW X1, Ford C-Max, Ford Escape etc.

    This list will be cut to three finalists till the end of the year and winners will be traditionally announced at the Auto Show in Detroit in January 2013. The best “North American Car / Truck of the Year” in 2012 were considered Hyundai Elantra and Range Rover Evoque.

    As for “European Car of the Year”, there will be 34 cars claiming this award. Cars, manufactured this year and being available to buy at least in five European countries, take part in this contest. Besides, one of the mandatory conditions is the annual sales volume of not less than 5,000 of such cars. Special versions and other modifications can not take part in this contest. The final short-list consisting of seven leaders in their classes will be announced in December and absolute winner will be chosen from them.

    The jury consists of 58 automotive journalists from 22 European countries. The number of country's representatives depends on its market size and its significance for car industry, that is why such countries as France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain are represented by six jurymen.

    There are such cars in this year's list as Audi A3, BMW 3-Series, Honda CR-V, KIA Optima, Mitsubishi Outlander, Porsche Boxster, Volvo V40, Toyota Prius Plug-in and others.
