Southeastward from London now is officially open sixth international airport of the city – London Southend. EasyJet company will start its daily flights from this airport from the 2nd of April. It will perform flights to such locations as Amsterdam (Netherlands), Belfast (Northern Ireland), Faro (Portugal), Jersey (UK), Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Malaga and Majorca (Spain). Besides, Aer Lingus Regional Company will perform flights to Dublin (Ireland) and Aer Arran Company – to Waterford.

Southend Airport is built on the base of an old airdrome, that was located there previously. But for many years there had been only air club on its territory. There was a time when Southend was the third-busiest airport in United Kingdom till BAA Company, present operator of six British airports, has built Stansted Airport, that replaced an old-fashioned Southend.

But now, after it was renovated and reopened, its airstrip was elongated (for about $160 mln), so it is expected that Southend will unload other airports including Heathrow.

There are also good news for the local economy, because by the summer new airport will provide region with more than 500 jobs and will have positive influence on local tourism industry, especially considering The 2012 Summer Olympics.
