Automotive company Daimler AG officially confirmed the production of a compact SUV on the new A-Class platform.

Off-roader will be manufactured on the plant in Radstadt and it is expected that it will be called GLA. It will be fitted with the same engine range as A-Class hatchback: 1.6L and 2.0 petrol engines, developing from 122 to 211 hp, and diesel engines as well. Aggregates could work in connection with a six-speed manual transmission and seven diapason “robot” with two clutches. A new car will become a rival of Audi Q3 and BMW X1 crossovers. It will hit the market approximately in 2013.

According to Mercedes, compact models of premium brands are very popular these days. For example, since new A-Class came to the European market in the middle of June, this model was purchased by more than 40 thousand people. And from November 2011 there were sold 70 thousand B-Class cars.

Mercedes has already spent € 600 million on compact models development and plans to invest the same amount to expand this range in 2012 and 2013.
