Experts of ADAC – largest automobile club in Germany and Europe – made lists of most reliable and unreliable cars on the European roads, following the results of vehicle breakdown analysis last year.

There were more than 2.6 million breakdowns of 500 cars analyzed during the research. It was a must for vehicles to be not more than six years old, be continuously manufactured during three years in amount of 10,000 annual copies. As a result, 93 vehicles met the criteria in 2012.

It has emerged that owners of Smart Fortwo, Chevrolet Matiz/Spark, Honda Jazz, Fiat Punto, Hyundai i20, Hyundai i30, Peugeot 308, Seat Ibiza/Cordoba, VW EOS, Ford Mondeo, Ford S-Max and Opel Zafira requested for assistance to ADAC due to technical failures on the road.

The most reliable according to German experts were such vehicles as VW Fox, Ford Ka, Citroen C1, Nissan Micra, Mini Cooper, Peugeot 206, Renault Twingo, BMW X1, Audi A1, Citroen C4 Picasso, BMW 1-, 3- and 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz A-, B- and C-Class, Audi A5, Audi A6, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK.

As ADAC experts note, one in three breakdowns causes was related to a discharged battery. For example, there is a special battery set to vehicles with Start/Stop system. If it is located next to an engine, then it may run low a lot faster than usually due to a high temperature.

However, not only premium class cars may have structural defects, but also such technically simple cars as Honda Jazz and Chevrolet Matiz/Spark. Most often it happens because companies save on cheap repair parts.
