According to Volvo company's representatives, every next generation of Volvo vehicles will be on a new SPA platform.

SPA means Scalable Platform Architecture and is meant for upcoming Volvo cars as in compact cars segment and such off-roaders as XC90. This global strategy needs a lot of company's resources because all Volvo model range will be fitted with an SPA platform in the future.

Along with SPA, as it was promised last year, automotive manufacturer from Sweden is going to introduce the new engine family. It will consist only of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel aggregates using KERS Recovery System.

When the first model built on an SPA platform will become serial in 2013-2014, about 90% of its components will be new and unique and then the number of replaceable components in Volvo model range will grow.

For a new platform are used such weight-saving technologies of the car as high-tension steel and boards of aluminum allowing to make Volvo cars 100-150 kg lighter comparing to other cars of this class.

The using of KERS Recovery System will let to add to a four-cylinder engine up to 80% of power in the short run with lower fuel consumption. It is expected that next XC90 generation as well as V40, introduced at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, will be built on a new platform.
