Authorities of Bern, the capital of Switzerland, trying to find a solution of the crosswalk accidents problem, decided to encrust crosswalk road signs with Swarovski crystals.

The thing is not that they don't know how to spend federal funds – it's just that sparkling gems will make crosswalks more noticeable, especially when it is rain or night time, and will prevent accidents as well. First such a road sign was already placed at the traffic light on Sulgeneckstrasse.

This road decoration costs 9.8 per kilo, which is 5% of crosswalk organization value. At the moment city authorities allocated for this re-equipment € 415000. But it is noteworthy, that quality of these Swarovski gems is less than the real ones.

According to statistics, only last December more than 30 people got hurt at the crosswalks in Bern: there were 5 fatal cases, 23 people were wounded and 5 others suffered serious injuries. In order to solve this problem, local authorities made road signs brighter, selecting different color schemes and from now on – mixing it with Swarovski crystals, to make it more noticeable in the headlights.
