Renting a Car in Zaporozhye: Quaint Beauty in South-Eastern Ukraine

Zaporozhye is a small, beautiful city situated in the southeastern part of Ukraine. Formerly known as Alexandrovsk, the city sits on the banks of the Dnieper River and is the sixth largest city in the country and one of the biggest administrative centers in the region. It gained its current name in 1921 when the Soviet regime was established in the country. Prior to the building of the Hydroelectric Station, the River Dneiper was full of rapids – hence ‘Zaporozhye’, which means ‘beyond the rapids’. The island of Khortitsa is in the middle of the city, splitting the river into two. Although the city itself can get a little polluted, the Khortitsa Isle offers a literal breath of fresh air, as it is protected by clean, fresh water and dry air from the steppe. A popular destination amongst Ukrainians, the island contains many health centers and spas.

Zaporozhye is a city thriving with industry and culture, and it offers an eclectic mix of history and modernity. The Khortitsa National Sanctuary is a beautiful reserve with forests, beaches, and the river, and visitors can enjoy hiking, swimming, and kayaking, and many other ways to enjoy the scenery. The island also boasts historical monuments, including a fortress, as well as the Museum of Zaporizhian Cossacks. The museum houses exhibits dating back to the Stone Age.

For children, there’s the Zaporozhye Children Railway, and a delightful puppet theater. You can find everything you need in any of the large shopping malls and complexes around the city. All in all, Zaporozhye is a vibrant city that will satisfy history-buffs, nature-lovers, and city slickers alike.

When to Visit

For those who want a sunny vacation, the best time to visit Zaporozhye is probably between June and August, when the temperature is a pleasant 72℉. January sees the temperature as low as -4, so visiting at this time is only advisable if you are prepared for cold weather.
