Alassio is a small Italian resort situated on one of the most beautiful coasts of Europe – the Ligurian Riviera. The Gulf of Genoa is deservedly called the Sunny Gulf. The sun shines almost all year round, in summer the temperature of water is never lower than 24°C but even in winter it is warm and comfortable here so tourists come to Alassio in any season.

Among numerous resorts nested on steep cliffs of the gulf Alassio has a special status. In the 19th century it was chosen as a place of winter retreat by English aristocrats who escaped from their native Albion’s cold and slush to breathe fresh and warm Mediterranean air. Alassio is very popular among celebrities who seek quiet and beautiful places for vacation where paparazzi would not bother them. Younger tourists love Alassio as well – for the most stylish discotheques in Riviera.

There is a lot to please your eyes in Alassio. The most grandiose architectural monument is St.Ambrose Church built in the XI century. Its interior is decorated with frescos and paintings by famous Italian painters of XVI-XVII centuries, including works by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo who is one of the best representatives of Venetian school of painting. Madonna della Guardia church built on the cliff is very beautiful as well as Romanesque Santa Croce church. Picturesque fortification walls built in the XVI century to guard the city against pirate attacks are worth to take a look.

But what people of Allassio are proud the most is Il Muretto – the famous wall near café Roma. In the 1950’s it was a favourite place of many celebrities and one of the visitors, Ernest Hemingway, advised the café’s owner Mario Berrino to create a very special guestbook – a wall covered with tiles with signatures of famous customers. Today the number of tiles exceeds 550. Jean Cocteau, Adriano Celentano, Anita Ekberg and many more left there their autographs.

There is a beautiful sculpture of two figures in embrace in the centre of the wall. According to local legend this pair founded Alassio in the Xth century. The girl Adelasia was the daughter of Ottone I of Saxony, the emperor of the Sacred Roman Empire. She fell in love with Aleramo, a young and poor knight. Her father was very angry about that. The pair fled from the palace and hid in the mountains until the emperor pardoned them and gave them this piece of land as a gift. Staff of car hire office in Alassio will eagerly tell you this legend and many more stories that were accumulated for the long history of this wonderful city.
