Among numerous resorts nested on steep cliffs of the gulf Alassio has a special status. In the 19th century it was chosen as a place of winter retreat by English aristocrats who escaped from their native Albion’s cold and slush to breathe fresh and warm Mediterranean air. Alassio is very popular among celebrities who seek quiet and beautiful places for vacation where paparazzi would not bother them. Younger tourists love Alassio as well – for the most stylish discotheques in Riviera.

Its interior is decorated with frescos and paintings by famous Italian painters of XVI-XVII centuries, including works by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo who is one of the best representatives of Venetian school of painting. In the 1950’s it was a favourite place of many celebrities and one of the visitors, Ernest Hemingway, advised the café’s owner Mario Berrino to create a very special guestbook – a wall covered with tiles with signatures of famous customers. Today the number of tiles exceeds 550. Jean Cocteau, Adriano Celentano, Anita Ekberg and many more left there their autographs.

There is a beautiful sculpture of two figures in embrace in the centre of the wall. According to local legend this pair founded Alassio in the Xth century. The girl Adelasia was the daughter of Ottone I of Saxony, the emperor of the Sacred Roman Empire. She fell in love with Aleramo, a young and poor knight. Her father was very angry about that. The pair fled from the palace and hid in the mountains until the emperor pardoned them and gave them this piece of land as a gift.
