History buffs are probably familiar with the ancient Roman road known as the Via Appia. What they may not know is that the port city of Brindisi, Italy is the end of that famous roadway. This road has carried countless pilgrims, crusaders, and traders to ships docked here to take them to Greece and other parts of the Near East. The city has been able to keep much of its antiquity, and this is one reason so many people come here. No visit here is complete until you visit the Museo Archeologico Provinciale Ribezzo. This is a large museum and you can spend the better of a day here if you wish. There are several floors of exhibits (with English translations) and they have a bit of everything. You can view over 3000 bronze sculptures, as well as terracotta figurines that date back to the 7th century. There are pieces that were found underwater and many Roman era pieces as well.
If you have a car rental in Brindisi, you can also drive over to the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Casale. This church is only a few kilometers north of the city and it is a great place to visit. It was built about 1300 and contain a variety of elements including Gothich, Puglian Romanesque, and Byzantine styles. You do not want to miss the Byzantine frescoes or the huge Last Judgement which is on the entrance wall.
A favorite for history lovers is the Porta dei Cavalieri Templari. This is all that remains of the Knight`s Templar church, but it is worth the visit. It can be found in the historic quarter, next to the cathedral.
