Despite its unassuming image, Winnipeg might surprise you. It’s a city with wide streets, friendly locals, and a mix of history, culture, and prairie charm, but to really see it all, you’ll want your own car. Public transit covers the basics, but if you're planning to explore the parks, hit the Perimeter Highway, or take a drive out to a nearby lake, having a car makes things a whole lot easier. Luckily, EconomyBookings offers many cheap car rentals in Winnipeg, whether you’re flying into the airport or picking up from a spot in town.
Winnipeg and Manitoba follow clear, province-wide speed rules:
Road signs in Winnipeg are clear, in English, and follow Canadian standards. Speed limits are posted in kilometres per hour and often change after intersections.
As you drive beyond the city, signs remain consistent and help guide you toward major routes like the Perimeter Highway, the Trans-Canada, and other regional roads.
There are no toll roads in Winnipeg or elsewhere in Manitoba. You can drive throughout the region without needing to pay any road-use fees.
While other provinces have toll routes, Winnipeg drivers won’t encounter any charges or restricted driving zones.
With a vehicle, it’s easy to explore Winnipeg’s highlights and nearby escapes. Start with Assiniboine Park, then use the Perimeter Highway to access different parts of the city. St. Vital, Lagimodière Boulevard, and other key routes make navigating smooth.
For day trips, Birds Hill Park and Lower Fort Garry are just outside the city. If you’re up for a longer drive, Grand Beach and Pinawa are scenic spots located within 90 minutes of Winnipeg.
Winnipeg experiences all four seasons, each with its own personality. The best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you’re after.
English is the main language used in signage, documents, and customer service in Winnipeg. Although the city is culturally diverse, with a large Indigenous population and a few immigrant communities, English is the standard for communication.
Winnipeg uses the Canadian Dollar (CAD). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere. Tap payments and mobile wallets are common. Parking apps also accept cards, so cash is rarely needed.

I appreciate the price and the easy location to the airport (right inside the terminal). Easy drop off as well.

The entire experience was easy and the car was exactly what we needed. The representative at the counter was friendly and provided useful information. I really appreciated that I didn’t need to worry about stopping for gas before dropping the car off.

First off, Dollar and Hertz are at the same counter in Winnipeg and are located in the airport, which is convenient. On arrival it was fairly simple to get the car (although the customer service rep was on the phone, he processed my reservation while talking to another customer - good multi-tasking!). The car was clean inside, had no mechanical issues, good tires, and was easy to park and drive. Front seats were heated, as was the steering wheel - a good car for a chilly week in Winnipeg in that regard. Gas mileage was also good, as 5 days of driving cost me about $42 in gas (at $1.36 a litre). Economy bookings was cheaper than just about anyone else I spoke with who had rented a car for the same period.
