Your quick travel guide to San Francisco Airport

Tips when renting a car at San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

      • Note that prices rise during peak travel seasons, such as summer vacation, corporate conferences like Salesforce’s Dreamforce and Microsoft Ignite, cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year and San Francisco Pride, and major sporting events like NFL football games, NBA basketball games, and MLB baseball games. Book early!
      • In California, you can drive with a valid driver’s license from your own country. If you plan on doing an extended stay in the United States and/or driving into other states, you may want to obtain an International Driver’s Permit (IDP). Still, you will need to present your actual license alongside your IDP when asked for a valid driver’s license.
      • You will find many rental car offices at and around the airport, especially at the official SFO Rental Car Center on McDonnell Road near the US 101 freeway. SFO’s AirTrain Blue Line operates 24 hours daily and connects all terminals to the Rental Car Center.
      • While you can find many more rental car offices across the Bay Area, make sure you know where you’re going if you plan to pick up a rental car farther away from the airport. If in doubt, you can save yourself time and peace of mind by picking it up at the airport. (See above.)
      • Planning to drive out of state and/or use any toll roads? Ask your rental agency how they handle fees.
      • Pick the right car for your journey. Smaller cars will be more efficient on busy city streets, while SUVs or all-wheel-drive vehicles are more suitable for trips outside the city, especially if you’re planning road trips to rural areas like the wine country regions, the North Coast, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
      • Inspect the car and take photos at pickup and drop-off.
      • Though winter snowfall rarely happens at the coast, tire chains may be required when driving into mountain areas with colder climates.

Why Rent a Car at San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Once off the plane (and past U.S. Customs), visitors will find designated passenger pick-up areas outside all terminals for Lyft and Uber rides, as well as the AirTrain to connect to the on-site BART train station and the aforementioned SFO Rental Car Center.

Since the airport is close to the US 101 freeway and the I-280 freeway (via I-380), you can stow your luggage in the trunk and start driving wherever you want to go. It’s ideal for travellers with children, on a tight schedule, or planning to visit multiple destinations. Though San Francisco has one of the United States’ best urban mass transit networks, you will likely still run into difficulties when attempting to reach farther-out areas like the Marin Coast, the Napa Valley, and Lake Tahoe without a car. Having your own car lets you reach more places with ease.

Driving from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) – Getting Started

As noted earlier, SFO connects to US 101 and I-280, which provide access to Northern California’s larger freeway network. Depending on traffic, you should be able to reach the city’s Financial District and the Embarcadero in about 30-60 minutes, Half Moon Bay in about 40-70 minutes, Healdsburg (in Sonoma County) in about 2-3 hours, Yountville (in Napa County) in about 2-3.5 hours, and Lake Tahoe in about 4-6 hours.

Whichever route you take, budget yourself plenty of time to get there, as SF Bay Area traffic can be notoriously heavy.

      Common routes include:

      • Embarcadero/Financial District – About 30-60 minutes via US 101 north
      • Presidio/Golden Gate Bridge – About 35-70 minutes via I-280 north and SR 1/Highway 1 north
      • Oakland/Berkeley – About 1-2 hours via US 101 north and I-80 east
      • Palo Alto/Stanford University – 30-60 minutes via US 101 south or I-280 south
      • Half Moon Bay – 40-70 minutes via I-280 south, SR 92 west, and SR 1/Highway 1 south
      • San José – 60-90 minutes via US 101 south or I-280 south
      • Santa Cruz – 1.5-2 hours via I-280 south and SR 17 south
      • Monterey/Carmel – 2-3.5 hours via I-280 south, SR 17 south, and SR 1 south
      • Healdsburg – 2-3 hours via I-280 north, SR 1 north, and US 101 north
      • Yountville (Napa Valley) – 2-3.5 hours via US 101 north, I-80 east, and SR 29 north
      • Sacramento – 2.5-4 hours via US 101 north and I-80 east
      • Kings Beach (Lake Tahoe) – 4-6 hours via US 101 north and I-80 east

Inclement weather and heavy traffic can affect travel times, so use GPS or your favorite navigation app for real-time updates and road conditions. In addition, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has its own QuickMap app available for download onto Apple and Android devices. If you’re driving into rural areas, cell service can be limited, so save and download directions before you start driving. And if you’re planning a trip to Lake Tahoe or elsewhere in the Sierra Nevadas, you may need snow tire chains to drive during the winter season.

Explore San Francisco and Northern California from SFO

In San Francisco alone, you will find everything from cutting-edge technology and avant-garde street art to vibrant multicultural neighbourhoods and world-class cuisine. Once you venture beyond the city, there’s even more to explore, including the legendary wine country regions in Napa and Sonoma Counties, the famed surf breaks at Half Moon Bay, and the charming coastal communities of the Monterey Peninsula.

      In and around San Francisco:

      • Embarcadero, Financial District, & Chinatown – San Francisco’s downtown area has undergone a lot of change in recent years, but it’s still the place to go for classic SF landmarks like the Ferry Building, Coit Tower, and the many shoppes and restaurants of Chinatown
      • The Mission, The Castro, & Haight-Ashbury – To the south and west of the Financial District lie some of SF’s most beloved local neighbourhoods, including the historic heart of SF’s Mexican-American community at the Mission, the epicenter of the Bay Area’s LGBTQ+ life at the Castro, and the groovy countercultural oasis that is the Haight
      • The Marina & Presidio – Come to the Marina for its chic collection of boutiques and restaurants, and stay to discover local treasures like the Wave Organ and Crissy Field, and continue west to find the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge and beautiful bridge-view beaches like Marshall’s Beach and Baker Beach at the Presidio
      • Golden Gate Park & Ocean Beach – At the west end of the city, you will find the great leafy expanse of Golden Gate Park, storied museums like the deYoung and the California Academy of Sciences, and the vast expanse of sandy shore at Ocean Beach

Recommended day trips and scenic routes:

      • Muir Beach & Stinson Beach – Just across the Golden Gate Bridge lie the illustrious beach towns of Marin County and wonderful hiking trails at the Marin Headlands and Mount Tamalpais (or, as locals say, Mount Tam)
      • Healdsburg & The Russian River Valley – The Russian River Valley may be a more laid-back wine country region, but it nonetheless has many of Northern California’s most reputable wineries, and smaller towns like Guerneville and Monte Rio are a delight to visit
      • Napa Valley – With its remarkable line-up of brand-name wineries, Michelin-starred restaurants, and posh luxury resorts, the Napa Valley can be heaven on earth for foodies and oenophiles
      • Lake Tahoe – In winter, Tahoe is Northern California’s go-to destination for sporty ski resorts and other snowy adventures, but this famously crystal-clear alpine lake is also worth seeing during the warmer months
      • Half Moon Bay – Home to the famous Mavericks surf break that draws expert big-wave surfers from around the world, but non-surfers will also find plenty to see and do at the region’s other beaches, forest preserves, and historic downtown
      • Monterey & Carmel-by-the-Sea – The Monterey Peninsula may have some of California’s most beautiful beaches, along with the cool vibes of Monterey’s Cannery Row, the charming artists’ village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, and the sun-kissed wine country of Carmel Valley
