Your quick travel guide to Las Vegas Airport

Tips when renting a car at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)

      • Note that prices rise during peak travel seasons, such as New Year’s Eve, spring break, major sporting events like Formula 1 and NFL/American football games, and large conventions like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show. Book early!
      • In Nevada, you can drive with a valid driver’s license from your own country. If you plan on doing an extended stay in the United States and/or driving into other states, you may want to obtain an International Driver’s Permit (IDP). Still, you will need to present your actual license alongside your IDP when asked for a valid driver’s license.
      • At LAS, the Rental Car Center is technically off-campus, but just a short drive south. Shuttle vans are generally available from Terminals 1 and 3 to the Rental Car Center.
      • While some Las Vegas Strip resorts have their own rental car desks, you may be better off picking up your car at LAS if you plan to stay off-Strip.
      • Planning to drive out of state and use any toll roads? Ask your rental agency how they handle fees.
      • Pick the right car for your journey. Smaller cars will be more efficient on busy city streets, while SUVs or all-wheel-drive vehicles are more suitable for trips outside the Las Vegas Valley, especially if you’re planning road trips to rural areas like the Grand Canyon or Utah’s national parks.
      • Inspect the car and take photos at pickup and drop-off.
      • Though winter snowfall tends to be rare and light in the Las Vegas Valley, tire chains may be required when driving into areas with colder climates.

Why Rent a Car at Harry Reid International Airport (YYZ)

Once off the plane, visitors can travel from LAS to the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown by rideshare, taxi, and select local bus routes. However, renting a car directly at the airport is the most convenient way to start your journey. Since the airport is close to the I-15 and I-215 freeways, you can stow your luggage in the trunk and start driving wherever you want to go. It’s ideal for travellers with children, on a tight schedule, or planning to visit multiple destinations. Since mass transit options are limited outside the Strip and Downtown, a car lets you reach more places with ease.

Driving from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) and Around Las Vegas – Getting Started

As noted above, LAS connects to the I-215 and I-15 freeways, which can get you to Downtown’s Fremont Street entertainment district in 20 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic, and to popular off-Strip areas like Summerlin and Henderson. Pro tip: When driving to such outer-ring suburban areas, I-215/CC 215 usually goes faster.

(To reach the Strip, it’s usually better to follow the signs to University Center Drive, then turn left on Tropicana Avenue or Harmon Avenue.)

Common routes (beyond the Las Vegas Strip) include:

      • Green Valley Ranch/The District in Henderson – 10-25 minutes via I-215 east
      • Downtown Summerlin/Red Rock Resort – 15-30 minutes via I-215/CC 215 west
      • Boulder City/Hoover Dam – 30-50 minutes via I-215 east and I-11 south
      • Mesquite – 75 minutes to 2 hours via I-15 north
      • Beatty/Death Valley National Park – 2–2.5 hours via I-15 north and I-11/US 95 north
      • Springdale/Zion National Park (Utah) – 2.5–3.5 hours via I-15 north
      • Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona) – 4-5 hours via I-215 east, I-11/US 93 south, and I-40 east

Inclement weather and heavy traffic can affect travel times, so use GPS or your favorite navigation app for real-time updates and road conditions. In addition, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has its own Nevada 511 app available for download onto Apple and Android devices. If you’re driving into rural areas, cell service can be limited, so save and download directions before you start driving.

Explore Nevada and Beyond from Harry Reid International Airport

Las Vegas is Nevada’s most internationally known city, thanks to the bright lights and flashy casino resorts of the Strip and Downtown. Yet beyond the central casino districts, Las Vegas has far more to offer travellers, including state and national parks, multicultural communities, and plenty more unique offerings. Since LAS is the region’s international airport, it’s the perfect starting point for all sorts of excursions across Southern Nevada and beyond.

      In and around Las Vegas:

      • Las Vegas Strip – With kitschy themed casinos and lavish luxury resorts, the Strip is Vegas’ top tourist draw
      • Downtown – Fremont Street is Las Vegas’ other central gaming hub, but Downtown is also worth visiting for the many creative finds of the 18b Arts District and cultural treasures like the Neon Museum
      • Spring Mountain Chinatown – It may be known as Chinatown, but this stretch of Spring Mountain Road west of I-15 has a growing array of international restaurants and stores
      • Springs Preserve – One of the valley’s most beloved urban parks, boasting hiking trails, a botanic garden, museums, and relaxing vibes
      • Downtown Summerlin – Not to be confused with Downtown Las Vegas, this is Summerlin’s central hub for shopping and dining, and the Red Rock Casino Resort is nearby
      • Water Street Henderson – A short drive east of Green Valley Ranch, this is Henderson’s Old Town area with smaller/old-school casinos and a growing collection of restaurants and craft breweries

Recommended day trips and scenic routes:

      • Boulder City & Hoover Dam – Come for the iconic 1931 dam, and stay to explore this curious town that functions as a living time capsule
      • Mesquite – A perfect destination for champion-grade golf courses, and an ideal “base camp” for excursions to public lands like Gold Butte National Monument and Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument
      • Beatty – A tiny yet picturesque town that serves as a gateway to Death Valley National Park
      • Zion National Park – Home to a 1,000-foot deep sandstone red rock canyon, gorgeous stream oases, and some truly daring hiking trails
      • Grand Canyon National Park – Perhaps the United States’ most famous national park with a chasm dropping over a mile to the Colorado River and spectacular bursts of colour across the canyon walls
