Your quick travel guide to Denmark

Car Rental in Denmark: the kingdom where castles meet modern architecture

Officially the Kingdom of Denmark, this country is home to the oldest still-existing kingdom in the world and spans across numerous islands in addition to its major landmass of the Jutland. To truly experience this country at its best, explore each of the islands and the Jutland thoroughly via rental car; you’ll love the seamless meeting of old world castles with new world design sensibilities.

Denmark witnesses four distinct seasons without many extreme weather conditions; summer spans from about June to September. A rain jacket is recommended regardless of your travel dates.

Danish is the official language of Denmark, though a vast majority of the population also speaks good English, and you’re also likely to come across speakers of German and French as well.

Denmark is located in the Central European Time Zone, UTC+1.

The currency is the Danish krone, which is more or less pegged to the Euro at 1 Euro to around 7.5 kroner. ATMs are widely available in most towns and all large cities, though you may find that they are closed at night.

Automobile hire is available in most Danish cities and towns, though you are likely to find your cheapest rentals in metropolitan centers such as Copenhagen, Billund, Odense, Horsens, and Aalborg.

Visa Regulations

As a member of the Schengen Agreement, Denmark accepts visitors from many countries visa-free for up to 90 days - regardless of time spent in a previous Schengen country. If you do need to apply for a visa, you can do so at a Danish consulate; if there isn’t one in your area, you can often also apply at a Swedish or Norwegian consulate instead.

Driving in Denmark

With well-maintained roads and a surprising amount of landscape variety in this quite flat country, driving is a real joy in Denmark. Just keep your eyes open for ample bicycle traffic along your travels, and expect to have to park your car outside of the city centers, which are peacefully maintained for pedestrians. Book your rental today to experience Denmark beyond its city centers. You won’t be disappointed!

Right-Hand Driving

  • Traffic proceeds on the right-hand side of the road as in the rest of continental Europe.

Typical Speed Limits

  1. On motorways: 130 km/h (80 mph)
  2. On rural highways: 80 km/h (50 mph)
  3. In cities and towns: 50 km/h (31 mph)
  4. You should expect rush hour traffic congestion in all the major metropolitan areas of Denmark.

Other Regulations

  • Parking is regulated by time and oftentimes by fee in the cities of Denmark. Make sure your rental company provides you with a time disk, which you will use to mark your arrival in fee-free rental areas. Avoid traffic by parking outside of city centers and enjoy the walk in!
  • Headlights must be on at all times.
  • If your driver’s license has been issued by a country outside of the European Union, the United States, Canada, or Australia, you should have an international driver’s permit in addition to your domestic driver’s license to rent and drive a car in Denmark.
  • Double-check tolled bridges along your route and weigh the price of the tolls against the cost of taking a ferry; you may find that ferrying to your next destination is ultimately cheaper with high Danish gas prices calculated into your travel coasts. The two tolled bridges are the Storebæltsbroen between Zealand and Funen and the Øresundsbron between Copenhagen and Malmö, and the tolls cost upwards of 200 kroner.
  • While Danes can be licensed to drive as young as 18, you will likely have to be at least 21 years of age with a full year’s driving experience to rent a car in Denmark. You are also likely to be issued young-driver surcharges up to the age of 25.

Other Tips

  • Ask your rental company if they are providing you the tax-free price for your car, if your permanent residence is located anywhere outside of Denmark.
